"... here above the Ancre lie many of the most gallant of my regiment, men who were my friends, men whose memory I shall revere to the end of time. Some of them were soldiers by profession; others had turned aside from their chosen avocations in obediences to a call which might not be denied... they have passed into silence. We hear their voices no more. Yet it must be that somewhere the music of those voices linger..."

Charles Douie, 'The Weary Road' (1929)

Somme Battlefields
by Paul Reed

July 2006 marked the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. A battle which claimed the lives of more than 150,000 soldiers from Britain and the Commonwealth. This website was launched to commemorate this important turning point in our history and the men who fought and died in the fields of Picardy... more than ninety years ago.

The site is by military historian and author Paul Reed, who is well known for his books on WW1 (including the best-selling Walking The Somme) and appearances on the BBC in programmes like 'Meet The Ancestors' and 'Timewatch'. Paul has been visiting the Somme for more than 25 years, and spends his time between houses in rural Kent and the Somme countryside.

The Somme touched us all... Lest We Forget...
