Somme Battlefields
by Paul Reed
July 2011 marks the 95th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. A battle which claimed the lives of more than 150,000 soldiers from Britain and the Commonwealth. This website was launched to commemorate this important turning point in our history and the men who fought and died in the fields of Picardy… more than ninety years ago.
The site is by military historian and author Paul Reed, who is well known for his books on WW1 (including the best-selling Walking The Somme) and appearances on the BBC in programmes like ‘Meet The Ancestors‘, ‘My Family At War‘, and ‘Timewatch‘. Paul has been visiting the Somme for more than 30 years, and spends his time between houses in rural Kent and the Somme countryside.
The Somme touched us all… Lest We Forget…
