While there are many books on the Somme, there can be no shortage of books like this which cover the details of one battalion's actions on the Somme in 1916. This one follows the 11th Battalion Border Regiment (Lonsdales), and in particular a draft of men who joined it from the Herefordshire Regiment. Starting with the action at Thiepval on 1st July, the book moves on to the costly attack at Frankfurt Trench in November 1916. The book is well laid out, with good, clear photos, and much information on the men themselves - including numerous named photographs and a roll of honour. The book also contains some suggested tour routes and walks connected with the story.
An excellent publication, well thought out and presented, and a model for anyone wishing to publish the results of their research. Highly recommended.
The book can be purchased on Ebay
