19 (western) division MEMORIAL, LA BOISSELLE

The 19th (Western) Division was a New Army formation which crossed to France in July 1915. It served in the Festubert and Givenchy sectors, and then took part in the Battle of Loos in September 1915. The division was in reserve on the 1st July 1916, but units from it began to take over trenches around La Boisselle following the failed attack their by 34th Division. It liberated the village some days later, and by 5th July had lost more than 3,500 casualties. It later fought at High Wood on 22nd/23rd July, and returned for the Battle of the Ancre in November 1916. Total losses on the Somme in 1916 were 9,830. The memorial was constructed in the 1920s.

The memorial is located just outside the church in the centre of the village of La Boisselle.
