The 47th (London) Division arrived in France in early 1915, and fought at Givenchy and Loos. It then moved to Flanders, and came down to the Somme in September 1916. Units from the division took High Wood on 15th September 1916, assisted by tanks - and in some cases with heavy loss. Many of the dead are buried in the nearby London Cemetery & Extension. The division later went on to fight at Eaucourt and the Butte de Warlencourt in October. The memorial was unveiled in the 1920s, and by the 1990s had begun to subside; public donations allowed the memorial to be restored and rebuilt. It sits on the edge of the wood overlooking the line of advance of the division in September 1916.
