'NINE BRAVE MEN' MEMORIAL, BAZENTIN LE PETIT

ninebravemen02.JPG (90081 bytes)

This is an original wartime memorial that was renovated in the 1990s. Erected by an officer of the 82nd Field Company Royal Engineers, it commemorates nine men of the unit who were killed in the construction of strong-points here on 29th July 1916; bricks from the rubble of Bazentin were used, and later a special plaque was made listing those who died. Only two of them have graves: Spr J.Higgins (Bécourt Military Cemetery) and Spr C.D.Ellison (Caterpillar Valley Cemetery).
