The 41st Division arrived on the Somme from Flanders in early September 1916. On 15th September they took part in the attack on Flers, supported by tanks. At one point a tank was clearing the village by driving down the main street supported by infantry; directly in front of where the memorial now stands. The memorial is a copy of the Royal Fusiliers memorial at Holborn in London: the 26th (Bankers) and 32nd (East Ham) Battalions both served with this division.
