The Bradford Pals were officially the 16th and 18th Battalions West Yorkshire Regiment, both part of 93rd Brigade, 31st Division. They arrived on the Somme in early 1916, and took part in the fighting for Serre on 1st July; the 16th losing their commanding officer Major G.S.Guyon, and 515 officers and men. The 18th lost over 490 casualties, also including their commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel E.C.Kennard. Relieved on 4th July, they moved up to the line south of Armentières, returning to the Somme in early October when the two battalions took over the trenches at Hébuterne. They remained in this sector for the rest of the Battle of the Somme. This memorial was placed in Hébuterne in the 1990s. It is located alongside the village war memorial, in front of the local church.
