BLACK WATCH & CAMERON HIGHLANDERS MEMORIAL,
HIGH wood

The 1st Battalions of both the Black Watch and Cameron Highlanders fought with the 1st Division on the Somme in 1916. On 3rd September 1916 both battalions took part in the fighting in this corner of High Wood, when a mine was blown under the German positions and 1st Camerons took their objectives. However, heavy German attacks threw them back, and the 1st Camerons lost 240 men and 1st Black Watch 201. The mine crater from this attack is located on private ground alongside this memorial, but in the spring, autumn and winter can be seen among the trees.
