18 (Eastern) division MEMORIAL, trÔnes wood

The 18th (Eastern) Division was very much a Somme formation, arriving in the area in August 1915 and aside from a brief beyond away, remained on the Somme until early 1917. On 1st July 1916 it successfully took the ground between Mametz and Montauban, and units from the division captured Trônes Wood on the night 13th/14th July. Returning to the Somme in 1918, the division also had the distinction of capturing Trônes Wood for a second time; one wonders how many soldiers who fought at Trônes. The memorial pictured above replaced a wooden cross that was erected here after the 1918 battle for the wood, and is one of two memorials to the division on the Somme - the other being at Thiepval.
