Flers-Courcelette

History

Flers was a small village behind the German lines until it was attacked and captured by units of the 41st Division on 15th September 1916 during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. During this action tanks were used for the first time, here successfully - one tank moving down the main street 'followed by the whole British Army behind cheering' ran one newspaper report.
